Members of the Fall 2009 graduating class of American University of Sharjah (AUS) have been urged to create value through originality. This was stated by Dr. Peter Heath, Chancellor of AUS, during a special luncheon held in honor of the graduating cohort of Fall 2009 at the university’s Main Building.

"You are ready to create value through originality. Remember that your ability to solve problems in an original manner because you have been trained in an environment that values the importance of fostering different viewpoints in the classroom viewpoints that are sometimes offered from different cultural perspectives," said Dr. Heath in his address.

"You have been introduced by AUS to the marketplace of ideas.’ What guides this marketplace of ideas is problem solving. You must seek solutions that work, knowing full well that these in turn will soon be replaced by solutions that work better," he noted.

He told the students that they must always bear in mind the manner they adopt to solve problems. "At AUS we emphasize that we all must act in a responsible and ethical way. In Sharjah, the AUS Class of Fall 2009 finds itself in the western edge of Asia at the beginning of what is called Asia’s century. A global society is forming that is the counterpart of the global market. We cannot let the guiding aim of the new transnational society be only profit. We must pay attention to the responsibilities we have to society and to our fellow travelers on this globe," he said. "The new ideas guiding global society will blend a strong emphasis on innovation and creativity with a renewed understanding of the basic importance of living ethically and in harmony with peoples from different cultures," he added.

You should have the flexibility and autonomy of mind and spirit to formulate the new solutions sought by your employers throughout your career," she said.
