Tawam Hospital Maintains JCI Accreditation

Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, has once again received international accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI). The JCI improves the quality of patient care by assisting international health care organizations, public health agencies, health ministries and others evaluate, assess and demonstrate the quality of patient care.

Tawam Hospital was one of the first Joint Commission International accredited government hospitals in the UAE. Receiving JCI accreditation provides assurance that the standards, training and processes used to survey the performance of health care organizations meet the highest international benchmarks for accreditation entities.

Ahlam Al Sheiban, Director, Department of Performance at Tawam Hospital, said that to maintain the level of care and meet such high international standards is a great endorsement of the hospital’s commitment to its patients. "We are determined to provide quality patient care in terms of medical treatment and emotional support. Our patients are always our number one priority, and to ensure their well-being and satisfaction, this accreditation recognizes that Tawam Hospital is at the forefront of administration procedures, staff qualifications, safety, leadership, and technology.

"The end results depend very much upon a cumulative and consistent team effort from every individual and every department at the hospital and it is their professionalism and dedication that results in the accolades received from the surveyors." she added.

Tawam Hospital has been heavily involved in community projects throughout 2009, including the mobile mammography initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness Day, which resulted in a 500% increase in the number of screenings from 2008. The hospital has also organized a number of high-level conferences on key issues including kidney disease, pain management, pediatrics and leading medical research, and initiated educational campaigns on breastfeeding and palliative care.

Carl Stanifer, CEO of SEHA said, “One of our goals is to have all of SEHA’s hospitals earn this distinguished seal of accomplishment. We are very proud and congratulate all of the people at Tawam Hospital whose hard work and dedication to excellence helped achieve this honour again.

“Accreditation is the gold standard of excellence in the healthcare industry. Accreditation is attainable only through collaboration among all organization staff members. Providing high quality care is a team effort and one that gives employees a feeling of prestige to work in an accredited organization,” he added.

Michael E. Heindel, CEO of Tawam Hospital commented that, "While our work is focused on the overall care of our patients, it is great to receive verification that we are doing things right. It is good to know that we are meeting the highest expectations and delivering on our promises. It is reassuring to know that patients being treated at Tawam are in the best hands. This accreditation lets our community know that not only are we tested, but we are trusted."

JCI standards focus on the areas that most directly impact patient care, which include access to care, assessment of patients, infection control, patient/family rights, and education.

"This accreditation is essentially a confirmation of best practice and we will continually strive to achieve the highest standards of evidence-based care," added the chief executive.

Tawam Hospital is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company which is responsible for the curative activities of the public hospitals and clinics of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
