Sharjah Museums Department Participates In Al Amal Camp 2010

Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) participated in the activities of the 20th cycle of Al Amal Camp organized by Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) under the patronage of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

This initiative, which is held from 30 January to 5 February, comes in line with SMD’s commitment to accessibility thereby providing a social and educational environment for all kinds of audiences including children with disabilities.

Sharjah Museums Department showcased entertaining and educational programmes for more than 140 children with disabilities from across the GCC region at the event. These included two workshops led by the Community and Accessibility Services at SMD; the “Al Kufi Calligraphy” for children between 9 to 12 years, aimed at educating and informing children about the old Arabic script used in the Holy Qu’ran; and “Green Sea Turtles”, a workshop on the turtles that are found on the coast of Sharjah and can also be found at Sharjah Aquarium.

“The participation of Sharjah Museums Department in the activities of Al Amal Camp highlights our active role to support children with disabilities. Our participation comes in line with the directives of the government of Sharjah to integrate and empower people with disabilities to contribute to their society,” said Manal Ataya, Director General, SMD.

SMD also organized visits for children with disabilities to three of its museums - Sharjah Discovery Centre, Sharjah Aquarium and Sharjah Natural History and Botanical Museum. The children toured the museums and participated in clay modelling, drawing, sand colouring and planting seedlings workshops. The activities included cartoon character show. The children were given souvenir gifts from the museums.

The Sharjah Museums Department, established in 2006 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, aims to promote the emirate’s rich legacy of arts, heritage and culture.
