250,000 Russian tourists visited Sharjah in 2009

Following its successful participation in the International Tourism Bourse in Berlin, Germany, where the emirate of Sharjah received the Best Arab World Exhibitor Award for 2010, the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) has also successfully concluded its involvement in the 17th Moscow International Travel and Tourism (MITT) exhibition, which took place in Moscow from 17 - 20 March.

During this, the SCTDA’s 11th participation in the event, the Authority continued its efforts in the international domain to enhance the emirate’s position to boost its already prominent position on the global tourism map.

While Sharjah has already become a tourism destination of choice for tourists due to its diverse tourism attractions, its participation in the 2010 edition of this premier show formed part of the emirate’s strategy to encourage international tourism, and reflected the SCTDA’s keenness to secure a leading position for the emirate on the international tourism map while pushing the wheels of the emirate’s tourism growth forward.

Director General of the SCTDA, H.E. Mohamed A. Al Noman, headed the Sharjah delegation participating in this important international tourism event. The Sharjah delegation further included representatives of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Sharjah International Airport Authority, Radisson Blu Hotel and Resort, and Al Khalidiah Tourism. Sharjah’s participation was aimed at increasing the influx of Russian tourists into the emirate in order to further enhance the record number of Russian tourists that have visited the emirate over the last four years.

Speaking on their involvement in the exhibition, Al Noman said: "Our participation in the 17th Moscow International Travel and Tourism exhibition formed part of our promotional campaign for the emirate of Sharjah. This was in further support of the strategy already established through a series of successes and important international participations this year. Our eagerness to take part in this gathering over the last decade is undoubtedly as a result of Sharjah’s interest in the Russian tourism market, which can be ideally accessed via MITT, an event that has garnered increasing status since 1994. This exhibition has played an important role in uniting the perspectives of those working in the tourism sector from various different countries." Sharjah remains one of the favorite destinations for Russian tourists, who consider the emirate a symbol of family, cultural and heritage tourism. Over 250 000 Russian tourists visited the emirate last year, while the SCTDA’s statistics show a strong year on year growth in the number of Russian tourists that have visited Sharjah over the last four years. In fact, Russian tourists are ranked first among tourist arrivals to Sharjah.

Striving for excellence in functional and aesthetic appearance, the emirate of Sharjah not only exhibited a unique stand with designs highlighting all the main attractions of Sharjah, but also provided accurate news and information to visitors about the emirate in both English and Russian.

MITT is one of the five largest tourist exhibitions worldwide. This year, it featured approximately 2500 companies from more than 111 countries. The total space occupied by the exhibition was approximately 27 000 square meters, and the show was attended by more than 120 000 visitors.
