UAE Ministry Of Economy Celebrates World Intellectual Property Day 2010

H.E Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri UAE Minister of Economy inaugurated today the celebrations of the World Intellectual Property Day 2010 organised by the Ministry of Economy at the head quarter of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry. During the event the Ministry honored strategic partners and authors contributed to the intellectual property rights in the UAE.

Mr Al Mansouri said in his speech: “One of the most important conditions to achieving sustainable development is an ideal environment where creativity is encouraged and rights are respected. Such an environment leads to innovation and development. These valuable lessons were understood early enough by the UAE, and the UAE Vision 2021 is proof of the resolve of our leaders to achieving progress through the efficient use of local resources. An important component of a strong economy is knowledge, and the UAE government is making huge efforts to build a competitive economy based on knowledge and innovation. A competitive, knowledge-based economy depends on the level of research, and integration of science and technology. The vision of our leaders and their focus has always been around investing in research, technology and human resources”.

“The UAE vision emphasises on qualifying our citizens to become future business leaders, by improving their skills and qualifications. A strong component of this emphasis is supporting small and medium businesses as the best example of entrepreneurial initiative and hard work. The UAE Ministry of Economy has been successful in removing the obstacles and challenges posed by piracy through total compliance with the regulatory work and legislation. We are confident that the steps taken by the UAE in fighting piracy will contribute to keeping the UAE a stable economy where innovation and ownership rights are recognised and protected. The Ministry of Economy recognizes the role of technology in offering better services and will employ state-of-the-art technology to guarantee and protect intellectual property rights,” He added.

The UAE joined the World Trade Organisation in 1996 and since then it has updated all the legislation associated with intellectual property to meet international requirements and WTO standards. The Ministry of Economy works with its partners and other ministries in the UAE to ensure that the rules and regulations governing intellectual property in the country are on a par with WTO standards.

Earlier this year the UAE hosted the International Publishers Association meetings under the theme ‘Promoting copyright and creating promising markets’. It was the first of its kind event to be held in the Middle East and was attended by 270 union representatives and 53 countries. The event demonstrated our commitment to promoting an IPR culture in the UAE.

The UAE is also keen on enhancing co-operation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) through sharing of information and experience. This would also involve co-ordinating with WIPO on such issues as abuse of innovations and inventions.

The Ministry of Economy has also organsied a variety of initiatives to increase awareness on intellectual property rights in the UAE. One of these initiatives was a campaign named ‘Let us become partners in protecting IPR’ launched in 2009 to inculcate due respect and regard for IPR among businesses and communities in the country.
