Sharjah Chamber Calls For Adoption Of More Environment-Friendly Best Practices To Help Achieve Sustainable Development

Local chamber and BCSD-UAE launch Environment Week initiative in celebration of World Environment Day 2010

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) made the call for the adoption of more environment-friendly best practices to help in the emirate’s ongoing efforts to achieve total sustainable development during the launch of the local chamber’s Environment Week initiative held recently in celebration of World Environment Day 2010. The Environment Week initiative, which will run from June 5, 2010 to June 12, 2010, is being organized in cooperation with the Business Council for Sustainable Development-UAE (BCSD-UAE), the local arm of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), which operates under the umbrella of SCCI. Accompanying the initiative is a special three days environment exposition (June 8 - June 10, 2010) that will feature environment-themed video documentaries and presentations.

Environment Week underlines both the SCCI and BCSD-UAE’s efforts to promote more public awareness on sustainability and the important role it plays towards Sharjah’s growth and development. The local chamber urged that the adoption of more environment friendly best practices can not only help the emirate come closer to achieving total sustainable development but also assure future generations of a better world to live in.

Hussein Mohammed Al Mahmoudi, Director General, SCCI, said, “The SCCI is urging Sharjah’s public and private sectors to look towards adopting and implementing more environment friendly best practices to help in the collective effort to increase sustainability. In line with this, we have launched Environment Week, an initiative we are spearheading with BCSD-UAE, that features a wide array of events and activities focusing on the latest techniques and strategies that seek to increase public awareness on key environmental concerns. Moreover, the SCCI reaffirms its commitment to address environmental issues and intensify joint efforts with the private sector, including the large and small companies, to promote sustainability in line with the vision of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to build an integrated society based on solid and balanced foundations.”

The Environment exposition is aimed at strengthening the role of Sharjah’s industrial and business sectors and their bid to adopt and implement more green policies and sustainable strategies. The event will showcase environment friendly industrial products and services of participating companies and organizations. The event is supported by BCSD-UAE, CLIPSAL, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Tiger Profiles, Sesam, Mulk Holdings, Bee’ah, Gulf Tainer, Pierlite, MECSD, Eco Ventures and Goumbook.

The BCSD-UAE was established in line with SCCI initiatives to promote sustainable development in Sharjah through the adoption of the best economic, environmental and social practices. The Council promotes the abilities and experiences of its associate members and develops leadership by identifying the best and latest practices in the business sector. This, the Council believes, is an important motivation for realizing strategic change, with the aim of achieving sustainable development and promoting innovation and growth throughout the various business sectors.

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) was established in 1970 with the chief aim of enhancing Sharjah’s reputation as an ideal business and investment venue. The chamber coordinates its efforts with specialized regional and international organizations and agencies in order to protect the interests of its members, the private sectors and business community through developing effective strategies that would create new investment opportunities; provide a competitive environment based on partnership between private and public sectors to enhance productivity; increase growth; and support economic diversification at a local level.
