Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) has launched a new book titled, ‘Masterpieces from the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization.’ The full-colour book presents a selection of 50 outstanding artefacts from the collection of the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization. The new publication is aimed at providing UAE residents and international visitors an unprecedented opportunity to engage with the history, culture and art of Islamic civilization.

“Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization upholds a legacy that is relevant to all humanity. The new book provides evidence to trace the intellectual contributions of Muslim scholars, artists and scientists. The numerous objects in the collection are not only examined from an aesthetic viewpoint, but also allow the visitors to embark on an intellectual journey to explore their significance, meaning and history,” said Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department.

Researched and written by Dr Ulrike Al-Khamis, Advisor – Middle Eastern and Islamic Arts Collections, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization; and Osman Fidan, Researcher – Manuscripts, ‘Masterpieces from the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization’ – available as a bilingual publication in English and Arabic – covers all the major areas of the collections including manuscripts, ceramics, metalwork, as well as, a host of other media such as textiles, wood and stonework, glass and coins. Each section features an art-historical introduction. The book also has a technical glossary and bibliography.

Dr Ulrike Al-Khamis said: “The book is intended to serve as a sample of the Museum’s extensive collection, which amounts to some 5000 objects, and represents one of the most important treasure troves of Islamic art and culture in the region and beyond. The multitude of artefacts in the Museum helps to provide a fascinating insight into the development of Islamic art and civilization, from the early Islamic period into modern times”.

“The selection of objects in the new book is intended to convey the richness and thematic depth of this extraordinary collection. Each masterpiece invites the reader to reflect upon the unique character of Islamic art and civilization and its interaction with East and West over some 1400 years,” added Dr Ulrike.

The book is available for sale at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization book store and at the other museums in Sharjah.
