Sharjah Economic Excellence Award 2010 Development Team Meets To Discuss New Strategies

Committee to submit recommendations to Board of Trustees as annual award continues to inspire Sharjah’s private sector to adopt benchmark trade practices and global quality standards

The Development Team of the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award 2010 (SEEA 2010) held a
special meeting today (Tuesday August 3, 2010) to discuss new strategies aimed at developing and enhancing the annual excellence award program. Results of the meeting, which include recommendations covering the award’s standards, criteria, marketing and publicity plan, will be compiled in a report to be submitted next month to the SEEA Board of Trustees for review and approval. The meeting reflects the SEEA’s commitment towards the adoption of more international quality standards and benchmark trade practices to help stimulate more economic activity and bring Sharjah one step closer to its goal of achieving total sustainable development.

Present during the meeting were Mohammed Ahmed Amin, Assistant Director General for Economic and International Affairs and Executive Committee President, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI); and Salah Taher Al Hajj, Head, SEEA Development Team. Also present during the meeting were members of the Development Team and SCCI officials.

During the meeting, members proposed and discussed ways to develop and improve the landmark award program, which continues to inspire the emirate’s private sector to adopt and implement benchmark practices. The standards adopted for the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award were developed and based on a fully integrated program aimed at recognizing the efforts of the private business sector towards Sharjah’s continued economic growth. This year’s edition of the awards saw a remarkable increase in the number of participants—reflecting the SEEA Board of Trustees’ continuing efforts to develop and enhance all aspects covering the awards.

Mohammed Ahmed Amin, Assistant Director General for Economic and International Affairs and Executive Committee President, SCCI, said: “The Sharjah Economic Excellence Award represents one of SCCI’s most important initiatives, which not only aims to help develop the emirate as an ideal investment venue but to also give SCCI members the opportunity to grow and achieve organizational excellence by adopting world class practices and standards. Today’s meeting covered many suggestions and recommendations on how to further develop the SEEA model, including ways to improve the nomination and evaluation process; how to attract more participants to join the awards; how to create more brand identification for both the SEEA and the nominees; and how to promote the adoption of more eco-friendly practices in today’s businesses.”

“Moreover, the SCCI remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthen the relationship between Sharjah’s private and public sector. Through the years, the SEEA has continued to encourage and inspire the emirate’s business sector to develop their products and services according to the highest standards of excellence and thus supporting us in our efforts to make Sharjah an ideal investment haven for the Middle East region,” he added.

The SEEA, which is held annually under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, aims to encourage the local business sector to adopt and implement benchmark trade practices to help in the collective effort to develop Sharjah and package it as an ideal investment venue. The award was originally launched in 1990 under the name “Best Exporters Award”, which aimed at motivating porters to develop unique mechanisms to increase their activities. The SCCI, which organizes the annual awards, improved the criterion of the awards and expanded the scope of participation. The award was renamed to “Elites Awards” in 1995 and renamed again to “Sharjah Economic Excellence Award” in 2001 under the directives of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi.
