Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department (SMD), Mr. Abdullah Al-Owais, Director General of Culture and Information Department, and Mr. Hisham Al Madloum, Director of Arts Directorate, inaugurated the “Expressions” exhibition by Bahraini calligrapher Ali Abbas Asheer at Sharjah Calligraphy Museum.

The exhibition, to be held until January 9, 2011, features 21 calligraphy works by Ali Abbas, which express the beauty of Arabic letters in several forms such as the camel, the horse, flowers and others. Ali Abbas is a calligrapher, painter, and logo designer who worked as Arabic scripts designer for the use of printers and publishing, and as advertising designer for various publications and magazines. He has also designed several book covers.

Selection of original new works by the artist is on display and communicates the artist’s fascination with the representation of people, objects and animals using primarily the repetition of Arabic letters and phrases. His works demonstrate highly skilled use of proportion, balance, and creativity.

“The exhibition comes within the framework of the participation of Sharjah Calligraphy Museum in the Islamic Art Festival, held under the theme ’Nagsh & Ragsh’ organised by Sharjah Department of Culture and Information. SMD is committed to support the work of contemporary artists that reflect various aspects of Arab and Islamic artistic traditions,” said Manal Ataya.

She added: “The exhibition is a perfect fit to the goals of the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum, the only museum in the Arab world devoted entirely to calligraphy, aiming to nurture the appreciation of the art of calligraphy and to support artists both locally and internationally working in this medium”.

Significant works of art from the Arab world and by international calligraphers are on display the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum underscoring the complexity of this vibrant art form and its historical and Islamic foundations. Arabic calligraphy on canvas, wood, paper and ceramics will inspire visitors with its positive and living energy.
