SCCI Calls For Participation In "Sharjah Economic Excellence Award"

Al Mahmoudi: excellence is key to tackling crisis & realizing Sharjah’s success

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has invited businessmen, commercial and industrial establishments to participate in the 9th edition of the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award (SEEA).

The award aligns with the vision of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Federal Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, for the Emirate’s strategy towards comprehensive growth. It reinforces the economic stature of Sharjah in order to attract more investments, maximize potentials and boost competitiveness in the face of constant challenges and changes.

Hussein Al Mahmoudi, a member of the award committee, noted that the current global financial crisis provides an opportunity to realize excellence which he explained is a keyword for development and success and a potent tool for bypassing the impact of the downturn. He added that establishing excellence as a means for commercial and industrial establishments to achieve success is in fact the most effective strategy for tackling the financial crisis.

Al Mahmoudi also pointed out that enhancing business excellence leads to high growth rates and huge investment and export volumes, all of which are main catalysts for economic development. He further noted that participation in the award forms part of a roadmap for identifying strengths and weaknesses and improving work environments towards the realization of the Sharjah Government’s objectives. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the efforts and innovative initiatives of those who actively develop their businesses.

Al Mahmoudi further highlighted the objectives of the award, including the establishment of a culture of excellence by developing special programs; enhancing business competitiveness; and sharing business expertise. He reaffirmed the importance of the award in encouraging the implementation of quality systems and regulations within businesses and developing competitiveness between diverse economic sectors in order to enhance management and performance efficiency as well as work productivity.

He concluded by saying that that the success of the previous editions of the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award reflects the strong support of the local business community for the award’s role of promoting better business performance and advancing comprehensive development.

For her part, awards coordinator Nada Al Hajri stated the SCCI’s eagerness to attract more participation to the event, noting that the latest edition is a new opportunity to highlight the exceptional performance and competitiveness of participants and to recognize quality in business. She added that SCCI is developing the 2011 Sharjah Economic Excellence Award 2011 to cover all pivotal sectors, including finance, commerce, tourism, and services.

Al Hajri revealed that the award will have 9 categories, including the gold category and the business leadership category, which were added last year as a result of combining the National Youth Projects Category and the Businesswomen Projects Category.

She concluded that the award process is based on a set of selection standards, documentation and field assessment mechanisms and judging deliberations as well as complementary programs that reinforce the efforts of the private sector and ultimately enhance Sharjah’s comprehensive growth.

Through the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award, SCCI aims to encourage the private sector to take greater interest in development and growth. Since its debut in 1990 under the name “Exporters Award”, the ceremony has been utilized to develop effective mechanisms for increasing trade and promoting a culture of quality within Sharjah’s investment environment.

The award has evolved considerably through the years in all aspects, from its assessment forms and standards to its nomination mechanisms and judging criteria.

The SEEA aims to encourage the local business sector to adopt and implement benchmark trade practices to help in the collective effort to develop Sharjah and package it as an ideal investment venue. The award was originally launched in 1990 under the name “Best Exporters Award”, which aimed at motivating porters to develop unique mechanisms to increase their activities. The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which organizes the annual awards, improved the criterion of the awards and expanded the scope of participation. The award was renamed to “Elites Awards” in 1995 and renamed again to “Sharjah Economic Excellence Award” in 2001 under the directives of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. The organizational structure of SEEA aims at helping enterprises in their management and operations with more than just quick reformation programs but by also motivating these enterprises to improve their competitiveness by offering high quality services and products. SEEA also aims at recognizing the achievements of enterprises that provide sustainable quality conditions and productivity improvements.
