SCCI Teams Up With Ministry Of Interior To Host Forum On Importance Of Private Security To Protect Investments

Forum underlines SCCI’s commitment to reinforce UAE’s social, economic and investment stability in cooperation with private sector to ensure highest levels of safety and security

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) hosted a forum recently on ‘Private Security to Protect Your Investments’, in cooperation with the Private Security Business Department – Ministry of Interior (MoI), in the presence of the Sharjah Police Deputy Director Brigadier General Abdulla Mubarak Al Dakhan, SCCI Director General Hussein Mohammed Al Mahmoudi, Colonel Ahmed Al Hantoobi, Director of the Private Security Business Department at MoI, SCCI Assistant Director General for Membership and Branch Affairs Khalid bin Butti bin Obaid, SCCI Assistant Director General for Economic and International Affairs Mohammed Ahmed Amin, and a number of officials from government departments, MoI, Sharjah Police and representatives of Sharjah-based corporations and enterprises. Organizing this forum underlines the efforts exerted by the Ministry to provide the highest levels of safety and security for all community segments by offering the best services and supporting the private sector, which is a major contributor in realizing development and growth objectives of the economy.

The forum is one of the key strategic initiatives to introduce the private sector to the laws and regulations related to private security companies by cooperating with different concerned authorities including MoI’s Private Security Business Department. The Ministry aims to ensure the highest levels of security and stability, which are a basic requirement to stimulate investment and drive sustainable development in vital sectors.

The forum commenced with the national anthem, followed by a video prepared by the Public Relations and Moral Guidance Department, Sharjah Police, showing the government’ efforts in enhancing safety and stability in the community and progress of these efforts in the UAE. The film also highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Interior towards ensuring safety of organizations and individuals, apart from measures like vocational training and field qualification plans for private security enterprises and their specialized agents.

SCCI Director General Hussein Mohammed Al Mahmoudi said that organizing this event was a major initiative that reflects the strong commitment to the directives of H.H. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, to enhance communication with all community segments in general and with the private sector businesses in particular. The initiative portrays the role of the MoI and also of private security businesses towards ensuring a safe, secure and peaceful environment in the UAE, which has become an ideal destination for investment and new projects in various economic, social and service sectors.

“The SCCI has drafted its work strategy for the next three years with a focus on strategic goals and policies dedicated to support the private sector and to develop strong partnership frameworks among the Chamber’s approved members and partners from federal and local government bodies in line with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah. We strive to further strengthen this partnership that His Highness has been emphasizing upon,” he said.

“The police departments have played a great role in creating a safe and secure environment in the UAE. We are confident that this would be replicated in the private security businesses. The SCCI is pleased to extend its support to the private sector in these efforts and in protecting its facilities and investments along with raising awareness about the importance of private security businesses. As we hope to carry on this fruitful mutual cooperation, we express our deep gratitude to the honored audience and all those who have a valuable contribution in organizing this forum,” added Al Mahmoudi.

In the first seminar, Major Abdulla bin Nassar, Director, Police Research Center and Strategy Team at Sharjah Police, spoke about the "positive role private security companies play in the fields of public security and investment protection", while Colonel Ahmed Al Hantoobi, Director of the Private Security Business Department at MoI, presented a paper on "Security Services Sector Governance". He underlined the importance that UAE holds on all security sectors and how the country believes in the importance of partnership between community and public security sector, and between this sector and police, taking into account the fact that some private security companies indulge in malpractice or non-compliance with rules and regulations.

He also pointed out that one of the most critical aspects of this partnership is the private internal security of companies working in trade, tourism, industry and other private fields.

The UAE now has its own goals regarding the private security sector and has realized the need to organize this sector, especially since globalization and multinational trade activities have became an integral part of the UAE community. Private security has become a global industry in itself with estimated revenues of approximately USD 150 billion.

The second seminar featured a presentation titled "The Role of Security Training Institutes in Preparing and Qualifying Security Agents" moderated by the Institute’s Director General, Professor Peter Darcy, who highlighted the role of private security agents in protecting the interests of an investor. The third seminar tackled Federal Law no. 37 of 2006 and punitive provisions pursuant to Article 20 thereof.

Concluding the activities of the forum, Mohammed Ahmed Amin presented a working paper by SCCI stressing the Chamber’s efforts in collaborating with its public sector partners to provide all required facilities in order to boost excellence and create an integrated investment environment with a view to foster UAE’s comprehensive growth.

Amin said that SCCI is confident that the in-depth discussions at the forum will contribute to the success of the vision and efforts undertaken towards an integrated and secure society. The working paper highlighted the close collaboration between SCCI and the Ministry of Interior towards realizing security and safety and providing adequate means for the protection of all segments of the society, through offering high quality services in collaboration with the private sector that has been a strong associate in reinforcing the development and growth of the economic and social sectors.

On the sidelines of the forum, an exhibition of licensed security enterprises was opened in which they displayed their services designed to protect investors and owners of economic facilities through ensuring the highest safety levels. The conference concluded with the honoring of the organizers, participants and companies that supported the event.
