Bee’ah Announces Environmental Research Institute

Bee’ah – the UAE’s leading integrated environmental management company, headquartered in Sharjah – announced its plans to establish the Bee’ah Environmental Research Institute aimed at promoting environmental research and advocacy.

The Bee’ah Environmental Research Institute will be launched officially by the end of 2011, in line with Bee’ah’s growth strategy to be a global leader for creating positive environmental change throughout the Middle East.

The Institute’s main objective is to give students the opportunity to learn and explore new technologies and concepts that could aid environmental sustainability, while also researching alternative environmental waste management practices.

Bee’ah is keen on promoting local and regional innovation in developing technologies, thus making Sharjah the regional hub for environmental research. With this in mind, the company has already linked and partnered with international institutions in North America, Europe and Asia.

The announcement came in the wake of an official visit to Bee’ah by a group of 23 post graduate students and professors from the George Washington University School of Business in the United States of America. The students represented several disciplines including Health, Environment, Pharmaceuticals and Business. The study tour was an opportunity to introduce the students to the state-of-the-art technologies adopted for the first time in the Middle East by Bee’ah.

Students, who will be working from the George Washington University campus, will conduct a 3-month research internship focussing on developing a 5-year business development and public awareness plan based on international best practices and market research.

Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, the General Manager and Managing Director of Bee’ah, announcing the Bee’ah Environmental Research Institute, said Bee’ah’s ultimate vision is to become a shining example of what an environmental organisation can achieve.

“This vision,” he said, “was not restricted by borders, and Bee’ah hoped to expand not only to the rest of the UAE, but regionally as well.”

Dr. Salah S. Hassan, Professor and Chairman of Marketing at the School of Business of The George Washington University, said: “Bee’ah is an example of what we stand for – commitment to educating the youth. Our students will not only experience firsthand what it means to work with an emerging global leader, but will also learn important lessons about integrity and positive environmental change.”

Al Huraimel elaborated on the Institute, saying that the Bee’ah Environmental Research Institute was vindication of Bee’ah’s outreach and educational efforts put in place to fulfil its establishment mandate set forth four years ago.

“We are constantly driven and committed to empowering, supporting, and educating students, as well as the community, about their role in improving the environment. Our work is not relegated solely to the collection, segregation, sorting, and distribution of waste for re-use in the economy, but also focuses on educating and relaying steps to guide the community to make the changes to improve the environment and ensure sustainable living,” he said.

Bee’ah’s many associations with educational institutions served as affirmation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah to educate and support the education of future leaders about the importance of a sustainable environment.

This, however, is not the first project established with educational institutions. Bee’ah had already established links with the American University of Sharjah (AUS), the Sharjah University and the Higher Colleges of Technology creating a collaboration platform to introduce opportunities for research and development, recruitment and internships, sponsorship and lectures, recycling programmes as well as events and functions. In August last year Bee’ah and the AUS entered a partnership on the Bio-filter Development and Testing for Removal of Air Pollutants from Waste Treatment and Industrial Facilities project.

In October 2010, Bee’ah, through the company’s relationship with the Sharjah Education Zone, targeted more than 100,000 students in over 145 schools via the launch of the Bee’ah School of Environment, introducing core environmental values into the school curriculum in the Emirate of Sharjah.
