Rising Demand To Fuel Regional Plastics Industry

Plastivision Arabia And Arabiamold Set To Be A Key Platform To Tap Into A Fast Growing Sector

Rising demand from emerging economies is set to stimulate average annual global requirements for plastics by over five per cent, and oil-producing countries of the region are well positioned to grab a bigger share of the market.

Being a key global player, regional countries are investing heavily in downstream petrochemicals to meet this demand, and annual plastics production of the Gulf States is expected to jump around 46 per cent to 155 million tonnes per annum by 2015, up from 105 million tonnes in 2010.

Recent announcements put this figure at nearly US$ 75 billion, and this is part of an ongoing drive to expand the countries’ industrial base and ease reliance on volatile crude exports.

According to a study commissioned by Expo Centre Sharjah, the value of the global plastics market is US$ 180 billion in 2011, while the plastic industry in the Middle East is projected to grow annually by 30 per cent.

The global plastics industry has recorded average annual growth of 9 per cent since 1950. In the past 30 years alone, international plastics production has grown by more than 500 per cent. Global plastics consumption is forecast to grow five per cent per annum for the period 2007 through 2015. In actual production terms, this represents an overall global production level of 330 million tonnes by 2015, says the study.

To take advantage of this high-potential market, Expo Centre Sharjah, in association with the All India Plastics Manufacturers Association (AIPMA) and DEMAT GmbH, is launching a new trade show – Plastivision Arabia 2012 and ArabiaMold – catering to the regional downstream plastics industry. The international plastics exhibition and conference and ArabiaMold will be held at Expo Centre Sharjah from May 14 to 17, 2012.

A press conference was held at Expo Centre Sharjah on October 11, 2011 (Tuesday) to announce the details of the show. It was addressed by Mr. Saif Mohammed Al Midfa, Director-General of Expo Centre Sharjah; Dr Eberhard Doring, CEO, EuroMold; Mr. Jayesh Rambhia, Incumbent President, AIPMA; and Mr. Ajay Desai, Committee Chairman, Plastivision Arabia 2012.

“During the past decade, the Middle East had been the most happening place for the global plastics industry. Now there is one more reason for the global plastics industry to focus on the region – Plastivision Arabia 2012. The show will be a comprehensive platform for raw materials, primary processing and auxiliary equipment and services from all over the world catering to the requirements of the expanding regional industry,” said Mr. Saif Mohammed Al Midfa.

“In a strategic move, Expo Centre Sharjah has tied up with All India Plastic Manufacturers Association (AIPMA), the organizers of Plastivision India, to organize Plastivision Arabia, and DEMAT, the organizer of world-renowned EuroMold. We will leverage on the expertise and experience of Plastivision India & EuroMold to present a show that will be a significant event for the regional industry,” added Mr. Al Midfa.

Plastivision India is the world’s fifth largest plastics trade show. Being organized once in three years, the eighth edition of Plastivision India held in Mumbai, India, in January 2011 hosted over 1,000 exhibitors from 17 countries. The exhibition was spread across 55,000 sq m of space and attracted 73,000 visitors, generating over US$ 200 million worth business.

EuroMold is the world’s leading fair for moldmaking and tooling, design and application development. The previous edition of EuroMold attracted over 1,354 international exhibitors along with over 60,000 visitors, making it one of the biggest exhibitions for the mold making industry.

“The Middle East is a fast growing market. Through our association with Expo Centre, we will help transfer EuroMold’s successful concept to the region and thus enable German and European tool and mold makers to participate in Arabiamold,” said Dr. Eberhard Doring.

“GCC is evolving from an oil-based economy to industrial economy and there is strong focus on the downstream plastics industry. From oil to polymers and plastic products, it is a huge jump in value addition. The sector is also generating more employment and contributing to the growth of the economy. Moreover, with demand from India and China rising, the plastic processing industry is adding value to GCC exports,” said Mr. Jayesh Rambhia.
In the past decade, regional governments have funded growth of the plastics industry in a new direction – downstream production. Currently, out of 25 million tonnes of plastic resins produced in the Gulf annually, close to 3 million are converted into finished and semi-finished industrial and consumer plastic products, and that the Gulf countries are eager to see more local processing.

“Plastivision Arabia and ArabiaMold will bring world-class plastic processing and molding technology at the door step for the GCC industry. With the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry , AIPMA and DEMAT focusing on promoting trade and industry, a major share of the revenue from the show has been earmarked for visitor promotion. This is sure to make Plastivision Arabia and ArabiaMold a converging point for the growing plastics and molding industry in the Middle East, Africa and CIS regions,” said Mr. Ajay Desai.

For Plastivision Arabia and ArabiaMold 2012, leading suppliers from all over the world will showcase their products to the fast growing regional markets, offering an unrivalled opportunity to strike sourcing deals, share technological know-how and provide all the latest developments in the field of plastics and molding.

The exhibit profile will cover raw materials and auxiliaries, plastic products and processing, machinery and equipment for the plastics and rubber industries, moldmaking, tooling, design and services for the industry.
Plastivision Arabia and ArabiaMold will be organized by Expo Centre Sharjah, in association with the All India Plastics Manufacturers Association, EUROMOLD and the support of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
