Children To Design UAE Postcards In Nationwide Competition

Young artists are being given the chance to get creative and design an official UAE postcard for the Emirates Philatelic Association (EPA).

Anyone between the age of five and 15 going to the Sharjah Arabian Stamp Exhibition this week will be handed a blank postcard on which to create their favourite traditional scene – as the country prepares to celebrate its 40th birthday.

The winners will then have the postcards printed and distributed by the EPA and win special prizes at the end of the exhibition at Mega Mall.

The Sharjah Arabian Stamp Exhibition 2011 is under the patronage of Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi.

The theme of this year’s event is “Stamps of the Gulf” and this competition is designed to encourage children to understand the role played by the region in terms of international postal services throughout the early 20th century.

EPA president Abdulla Khoory said: “Sparking children into being creative is a fantastic way of getting them involved in what we do.

“I am sure they are going to really enjoy designing the postcards and we are all looking forward to some brilliant efforts.”

Aisha Altanak is an EPA member and nursery school teacher in Dubai and said the exhibition – now in its second year – plays a vital role in helping children understand the history of the country and region.

“At a recent stamp exhibition in Japan I was very impressed in how they were engaging children by getting them really involved.

“For our competition I will be giving all the children the theme of UAE heritage but from there they can let their imagination go. It is going to be fantastic to see the winning designs printed with the child’s name on the back.”
