Bee’ah & Sharjah City Municipality Encourage Plastic Bag Manufacturers To Switch To Green & Blue To Empower Waste Segregation In Sharjah

Bee’ah – the Middle East’s leading integrated and award winning environmental and waste management company – and the Sharjah City Municipality are calling upon all plastic bin bag manufacturers to produce blue and green biodegradable bin liners, to distinguish and encourage the segregation of waste into recyclable and general waste respective to these colours.

This announcement comes in preparation for the expansion of Bee’ah’s residential recycling programme – the first company to bring residential recycling to the UAE – which is set to roll out in phases throughout the city of Sharjah, starting in January 2012. This commitment will see Bee’ah introduce all-new blue and green coloured plastic bins which will replace the current metal single stream municipal waste bins.

Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, Chief Executive Officer of Bee’ah explained: “We are committed to provide a solution to fulfill the requests from residents of Sharjah to make recycling easy and simple. This is why we are encouraging manufacturers to also contribute their efforts to our cause and make this readily available for our society to use.”
His Excellency Eng. Sultan Al Mualla, the Director General of the Sharjah City Municipality commented saying:

“Earlier this year the Sharjah City Municipality, in line with the Ministry of Environment and Water, launched its campaign to educate all citizens and residents about the hazardous effects of non-biodegradable plastic bags. We fully support Bee’ah’s dedication towards the environment and expect the community of Sharjah to apply environmentally responsible recycling habits and choose biodegradable bags for the disposal of their recyclables and waste.”

Bee’ah and its strategic partner, the Sharjah Municipality, has since 2009, successfully launched various initiatives, bringing an entirely new approach to the environment and waste management industry in the region. Bee’ah has built sophisticated waste management infrastructure and facilities at Al Saj’ah for systematic segregation and waste processing, implemented widespread clean-up operations across Sharjah through Tandeef, installed 1,750 3-stream pedestrian recyclers and launched various recycling programmes to encourage Sharjah residents to incorporate the 3Rs (reduce, re-use and recycle) into their lifestyle.

Additionally, the Bee’ah School of Environment, an environmental educational initiative supported by the Sharjah Education Zone and sponsored by various corporate partners, was launched in 2010 to educate children about being environmentally conscious from a very early age. The initiative had successfully reached over 85,000 students within 102 schools across the Emirate Sharjah after completing its first inaugural year, and aims to reach even more in its second year.

In 2011, the company was awarded ‘Best Waste Management Company in the Middle East’ by the Facilities Management Awards and was awarded the Arabia CSR Award in recognition for its educational and community initiatives in the Middle East.
