Under HH Ruler Of Sharjah Patronage - Sharjah Art Museum To Host Ibrahim El-Salahi: A Visionary Modernist

Under the patronage of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasmi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Sharjah Art Museum will host Ibrahim El-Salahi: A Visionary Modernist on view from 20 March through 31 May, 2012. The exhibition, organized by the Museum for African Art, New York, and guest curated by Salah M. Hassan, Cornell University, NY, will coincide with another touring exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), titled "Owen Jones: Islamic design, Discovery and Vision", that will be held at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization from 21 March -15 July.

Ibrahim El-Salahi: A Visionary Modernist highlights the exemplary work of Sudanese artist Ibrahim El-Salahi. The retrospective includes 80 works encompassing over five decades of the artist’s career. A Visionary Modernist follows work produced during El-Salahi’s travels from Sudan, while in self-imposed exile in Qatar, and on his continued spiritual journey in Oxford, United Kingdom. The exhibition highlights drawings, paintings, and literary ephemera on loan from international institutions and private collections.

El-Salahi’s body of work is not bound within one style nor is it constrained by the early parameters of Sudanese aesthetic practices. His paintings combine a critical understanding of western art principles with reference to Sudanese and Islamic art forms. His trademark linear style remains a pre-eminent unifying device expressing the intuitive merging of Islamic spirituality with critical social consciousness.

Speaking on the occasion, Manal Ataya, Sharjah Museums Department’s Director-General said, We look forward to building new strategic partnerships with museums in the USA, furthering research on our current collections, and continuing the development of our community outreach and accessibility programs to maintain our position as Arab and Islamic culture capital in the region."

"Hosting this exhibition aims to highlight the influential role of prominent Arab artists regionally, and internationally. It will add to the rich series of  extensive arts programming in Sharjah, particularly in March, which includes a number of exhibitions and performances also organized by the Sharjah Art Foundation.  This will continue to enhance Sharjah’s robust reputation for its genuine and consistent support of the production of art and fostering the growth of longstanding arts institutions" Ataya added.
