Sharjah Celebrates Earth Day & Pledge To Recycle


Over 600 Participated in the Bee’ah Walkathon Along The Sharjah Corniche and Pledge to Recycle










This year’s Earth Day theme ‘Mobilize the Earth’ inspired hundreds of people in Sharjah to walk for the environment yesterday.

Bee’ah – the Middle East’s leading and award-winning fully integrated environment and waste management company – in partnership with Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), successfully organised the first environmental walkathon. Over 600residentstook part in the event, and helped draw attention and raise awareness on the importance of recycling and the protection of the environment of Sharjah and the UAE.

Being committed to educating the community on leading an environmentally sustainable lifestyle, Bee’ah also conducted several activities at Al Majaz Waterfront, where the walkfinished,teaching children and their families about the environment and the simple methods of recycling.

Bee’ah Chairman, His Excellency Salim Al Owais said the walkathon also hoped to create awareness about the environment. “Protecting the environment should not end with Earth Day, but residents of Sharjah should continue to inhabit environmentally sustainable practices to protect the Earth’s precious resources. Not many people are aware that the UAE’s natural resources are scarce, and we should all work together to ensure that future generations inherit a sustainable world.”

Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, Chief Executive Officer at Bee’ah commented: “Each one of us has an important role to play in our Earth’s future. The success of our event was evident that we are all responsible individuals caring on the protection of our valuable planet. We would like extend our gratitude towards the environmental advocates and loyal followers whose support made this achievement possible.”

Commenting on the event,Mr. Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Operating Officer, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), said: "We are very pleased with the great participation that Earth Day has witnessed. It is a clear indicator to the environmental awareness in our society and a pleasure of ours to host such an event in collaboration with Bee’ah. We hope that this campaign, alongside other Bee’ah initiatives in the future, will lead to cooperative efforts of all members of society to protect the beautiful environment of the UAE and the entire world. We would like to thank all the participants, who played a vital role in the success of this event."

Mr. Najib Faris, Vice President of Marketing at Bee’ah remarked: “As part of our CSR mandate Bee’ah’s main purpose is to provide the essential tools and support to educate the community for the improvement of the environment of Sharjah, and based on the 42nd Earth Day message of ‘Mobilise the Earth’, we organised the first environmental walkathon to empower the community to collectively lead an environmental change and together shape the future of our planet.”

In addition, Earth Day in Sharjah also witnessed the launch of the first social media hub www.mybeeah.ae with the registration of 356 subscribers to the loyalty programme, within only the first day of the website going live. The mybee’ah loyalty programme was created to reward loyal environmentalists with redeemable points for their individual environmental efforts. This can be done by recycling at the Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) located around Sharjah city and soon around the UAE, by participating or volunteering at environmental events or even by engaging on the website. Points are redeemed in exchange for discounts, vouchers and other incentives from affiliate partners.

“Celebrating Earth Day is very important, because we all have to care ofthe beautiful UAE that we live in and protect it,” said Rasha Abdullah who participated at the walk.

“It’s been a great event,” said Neha Swaminathan, a 9 year old participant, “it really showed how people can come together to keepour environment clean and green.”

“I am participating today because we need to draw attention to our nature, and help preserve it for our children’s future,” commented Maria Laero who also took part.
