Sharjah Museums Department Celebrates The World Book Day And Participates In Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival For The Three Consecutive Years











As part of nationwide celebrations of the World Book Day, and As part of its social responsibility initiative "Because We Care" Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) ,is organizing a one-week programme at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum, with the aim of raising awareness of World Book Day among community.

SMD’s World Book Day celebrations, which began yesterday and will continue until April 30, aim to educate people about the importance of books and their impact on human culture and knowledge, as well as to foster a love for reading and to highlight the importance of continued education among future generations, in order to be able to cope with the modern age and its rapid changes.

The one-week program also aims to underline the value of paper books, which remains an important source of knowledge despite the diversity of knowledge sources in the age of technology and the internet.

On the sidelines of the week-long celebrations, SMD launched an initiative to collect used books, offering the public a chance to help increase the number of readers in the local community by donating used and unwanted books to benefit others. These books will be collected in special containers at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum. The one-week initiative is not confined to story books but also include used copies of the Holy Quran, which will be handed over to the Holy Quran Restoration Centre so that they may be restored to later be sent to Africa.

As part of SMD’s rich programme, Sharjah Art Museum is taking part in the 4th Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival which is being held under the theme "Explore your lifetime Friends" at the Expo Centre Sharjah, and which will continue until 2 May. Sharjah Art Museum is organizing workshops during the weeklong festival in its efforts to foster a love of reading and enhance the culture of reading among children, as well as to encourage them to develop their thinking skills and gain more information.

The workshops, which will begin at 10:30am, are aimed at developing thinking and bringing out the best in children. They include an art workshop dedicated to designing a book cover, and another one on writing short stories being held at the Sharjah Art Museum’s library. The Museum’s Guidance Section is participating with two workshops, one entitled "My Room" in which children get the chance to design a three dimensional children’s room, while the other is designed to help children make picture frames by using beads after which a picture of each child is taken to put in the frame.

SMD’s rich programme, which involved children from different age categories and children with special needs, included theatrical shows from across the world. The shows are dedicated to spotlighting the art of children’s books, including drawing, encouraging professional illustrators from all over the world to participate in creative competitions, and developing children’s books- a top priority by of the emirate of Sharjah.

As part of SMD’s programme, more than 100 cultural events will be held to enrich thinking and develop creativity among children.
