Sharjah Museums Department Participates In Arabian Travel Market 2012

Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is participating in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), being held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 30 April – 3May, under the umbrella of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourist Development Authority (SCTDA).

SMD’s presence at ATM this year forms part of its strategy to increase the exposure of its various museums and activities on regional and international levels, as ATM constitutes a major international and local tourism platform, which brings together more than 2000 exhibitors from 87 tourist destinations from all over the world. It is also SMD’s aim to highlight the importance of drawing greater levels of attention to both cultural tourism and heritage in the Emirate of Sharjah.

ATM, a premier travel trade show, offers a unique platform for industry players to exhibit and promote their tourist attractions, and as such is an excellent vehicle to promote Emirate’s museums as well as the numerous international exhibitions, which are currently being held at various Sharjah museums.

On the sidelines of its participation, SMD has announced the huge response and global interest that is being witnessed at the exhibition ‘Ibrahim El Salahi: A Visionary Modernist’, as well as the ‘Owen Jones Exhibition’. SMD is also actively promoting a number of exhibitions scheduled to be held in the upcoming months, such as ‘Opus‘ at the Sharjah Art Museum, amongst many other art and cultural events. The Department announced its full readiness to receive and organize special tours for tourist delegations during the course of ATM.

SMD’s Tourism Marketing Department held several meetings with leading travel and tourism agencies to promote its museums including archeology, art, calligraphy, science, and Islamic civilization museums on the sidelines of the ATM 2012. It also reviewed its preparations for opening the Sharjah Heritage Museum, which will be inaugurated in May by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah .

In celebration of the International Museums Day which coincides with a great number of other events taking place in May, SMD announced that the doors of all its museums will be open to public for free, on every Saturday during May until the end of June. and that a special and intensive programme has been prepared to mark the occasion. Visitors will be able to visit the Sharjah Aquarium and the Sharjah Maritime Museum using the same entry Ticket, in a move that aims to encourage the public to visit museums as well as to raise awareness about museum culture.

Sharjah Museums Department has also achieved great success through its participation in ITB Berlin 2012, and the 19th Moscow International Travel and Tourism (MITT) Exhibition 2012. SMD is also participating in other upcoming exhibitions which are World Travel Market 2012 (WTM) London as well as the Beijing International Travel and Tourism Exhibition.
