First Lady Of Sharjah Makes 1 Million USD Donation To UNHCR For Somalia’s Internally Displaced

Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi made a one million USD charitable donation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help address the ongoing health-related needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs) inside Somalia.

“In light of the changing landscape and resulting turmoil we are currently witnessing in our region, we are often reminded of our brothers and sisters in Somalia, of whole families having to flee drought and conflict.. As is the case in such difficult humanitarian situations in the wake of displacement, mothers, children and the elderly are often subjected to needless suffering and humiliation. Our hearts are with them and we pray to Allah to lighten their burden and end their suffering” expressed Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi

It is estimated that more than 1.25 million children across southern Somalia are in urgent need of lifesaving interventions – 640,000 of them are acutely malnourished. This contribution will go towards preventative and curative healthcare services which will be provided to some 129,500 Somali IDPs until the end of 2013 with the aim of significantly decreasing mortality rates among the displaced Somali population.

“With one in three Somalis in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and one in every three children in the South-Central region malnourished, Somalis continue to face one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world today” said Brigitte Khair Mountain, UNHCR Abu Dhabi Head of Office. “Through timely contributions like this generous one by Her Highness, we are collectively on track to significantly reducing this figure and increasing the impact of our interventions in Somalia.” she added.

UNHCR is leading the emergency relief and protection operation which is targeting some 1.36 million Somali IDPs, as well as refugees in neighbouring countries including Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen. One Duarter of SomaliaEs 7.5 million population has been displaced.

This project is a natural extension of Her Highness’ longstanding commitment to the mitigation of human suffering as part of the Emirate of Sharjah’s drive for humanitarian aid worldwide.

In 2011, the Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, donated more than 2.5 million USD to relief operations in Somalia and ordered the launch of an aid operation to help the drought affected population. Sharjah also initiated a nationwide telethon to aid Somalia. This generous humanitarian donation is the first collaboration between the ruling family of Sharjah and UNHCR.
