Dubai Culture To Organise Two Workshops Focused On Acting And Stage Directing

Workshops will start in September as part of the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre 2017

Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated entity for culture, arts and heritage, is welcoming all people who are interested in acting and stage directing to take part in two specialised workshops as part of the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre 2017. The acting workshop will run from 10th to 16th September and the stage directing workshop will follow from 17th to 23rd September.

The two workshops will be hosted by Dr. Nabila Hassan in the N5 building at Dubai Production City, where the practical and theoretical activities will take place from 5p.m to 9p.m. There are 50 places available for university students, theatre professionals and interested members of the public.

Dr. Nabila Hassan comes from an artistic background; in addition to her role as a university professor, she entered the world of acting in the early 70s and currently acts as Head of the Acting and Directing Department at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts. She has also appeared in several dramatic series and films with renowned artists including Fatin Hamama, Mohammed Sobhy, and Ahmad Zaki.

Fatma Al Jallaf, Head of Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre and Acting Events Manager at Dubai Culture, commented: “We are expecting remarkably high participation for this year’s workshops as they address essential topics and promise to enhance the skills of both stage directors and actors. The workshops are aligned with the new Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre programme, which covers all of the most important subjects for people who are interested in this field.”

The 12 days of workshops will shed light on several different topics including the history of the theatre, the improvements to Stanislavski's System, and the Grotowski approach to acting. The workshops will also discuss creative restrictions for actors and directors, and consider the importance of overcoming these obstacles to develop talent. By the end of the workshops, participants will have undergone personal element training for the mind, vocal system, respiratory system, body language, and team work for effective vocal and theatre movement. The workshops will also explore the director's relationship with scripts and actors, as well as their command of different elements of the theatre such as the set, costumes, music, and on-stage direction.

The Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre is open to participants who have the discipline to commit to the workshop hours, sufficient talent and desire to take part, and the ability to handle the pressures of intensive psychological and physical training. Dubai Culture also stresses that participants must be able to communicate with others through teamwork, and be willing to follow the work ethic required during the practical and theoretical exercises. Interested participants can apply via the following email address:  dfytworkshops@dubaiculture.ae

Dubai Culture is celebrating ten successful years of the festival, which has become a leading platform for nurturing the most promising theatre talent in the UAE and the Gulf region, including directors, script writers, actors, technical professionals and experts in costumes, lighting and make-up.

Dubai Culture aims to enhance Dubai’s cultural scene and draw attention to the Emirate’s rich heritage with a variety of initiatives that take place throughout the year. The Authority’s mandate is to build bridges of constructive dialogue between different civilisations and cultures through enriching initiatives that benefit the Emirate’s citizens, residents and visitors.
