Lights Out For 11 Abu Dhabi Organisations For Earth Hour 2009

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and ten of its partners will be switching their lights off as part of Earth Hour this year. Earth Hour is an annual international event, created by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that calls on individuals and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour. This year, Earth Hour will take place around the world on March 28, 2009 (8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. UAE time). The participating organizations in Abu Dhabi are Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Ambulatory Healthcare Services of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha), Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, Zayed University, Higher Colleges of Technology - Abu Dhabi, ADNOC Group of Companies, GASCO, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – MASDAR, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company and Standard Chartered Bank. To mark Earth Hour, some of these organizations will be holding activities to increase employee energy awareness. EAD is organizing an internal awareness seminar for its employees to inform them of the simple ways they can conserve energy. Moreover, in some organizations, the amount of power saved in one hour will be calculated and communicated to EAD, who will then report on the total watts saved. Around the world, Earth Hour aims to raise awareness towards the need to take action on Climate Change. Earth Hour’s aim is target more than one billion people in 1,000 cities across 80 countries around the world. The event will be seeing millions of people gathered in parks, streets, town squares and homes around the world to witness the lights going out on iconic landmarks and city skylines, while taking in the atmosphere of some truly unique Earth Hour events. “It may not be a solution to Global Warming but it’s a step in the right direction. Abu Dhabi businesses and governmental organizations are standing together to highlight the need to reduce energy use. We are also raising public awareness and passing a message that something can be done and must be done today,” he added. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director, EWS – WWF stated, “Earth Hour is a powerful symbol of what can be achieved through individual action on a global scale, with the whole world coming together in a response to tackle climate change. In the UAE we are keen to grasp the momentum generated by this global occasion, urging everyone to make the switch for one symbolic hour, thus taking affirmative action towards helping save our planet. “If Earth hour is seen as the global community responding to climate change, residents of the UAE can pledge to make an ongoing lasting difference by joining the Heroes of the UAE campaign at www.heroesoftheuae.ae . To create a sustainable environment for future generations’ people need to show they care every day by taking simple action, and following the campaigns energy saving tips. As a vital first step let’s join together as part of a global community to show our support for Earth Hour.” How Can You Help? •Switch off your lights between 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm on March 28, 2009. •The UAE has one of the highest per capita commercial energy consumption rates in the world.
