Sharjah Museum Department Organises Open House Event For The Travel Trade At Its New Sharjah Maritimne Museum

As part of Sharjah Museums Department’s (SMD) ongoing awareness programme to raise its profile within the tourism industry and in line with the very recent opening of the Sharjah Maritime Museum, SMD’s tourism division successfully conducted an Open House Day at the new fascinating Maritime Museum on Tuesday, 23rd June 2009.

This special event was organised for the local travel trade industry to educate staff from the UAE’s local destination management companies (DMC) about the new Sharjah Maritime Museum– the only one of its kind in the UAE. Manal Ataya, Director General of SMD, said that ‘these awareness programs are integral to ensure that accurate information about Sharjah’s heritage and culture is provided to those working in the tourism industry.’

The programme saw a guided tour of the museums as well as a visit to the Sharjah Aquarium, which forms part of the museums’ site in Al Khan. After the inspections, delegates enjoyed a sumptuous lunch at the newly opened restaurant ‘Sammach’ which is situated at the Aquarium premises and is part of the Bin Hendi Group. The lunch was sponsored by ‘Sammach’ restaurant.

A high attendance of many leading DMCs such as Alpha Tours, Arabian Adventures, Desert Adventures, Orient Tours, SNTTA and many others demonstrated the great need for and the interest in such familiarisation programmes to be made aware of Sharjah’s wealth of unique cultural offerings for tourists.

Given the positive response to this programme, in the near future SMD’s tourism division will hold further events for the travel trade including a specific tour guide training about the museum’s collection.
