flydubai Announces Second GCC Destination - Bahrain

flydubai, Dubai’s first low cost airline, has continued to expand its route network with the announcement of its second GCC destination and tenth point on its network, Bahrain.

The low cost carrier landed on the world stage exactly six months ago when the airline’s first Boeing 737-800 was unveiled before a crowd of media and VIPs at the Dubai Airport Expo’s Royal Pavilion. The same venue was chosen for today’s announcement, which took place on the fourth day of the Dubai Airshow.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, said: “Announcing Bahrain as our tenth route at the Dubai Airshow is a nice way to round off a successful six months since the unveiling of the first flydubai aircraft. On May 18, when I was watching the crowd catch their first glimpse of a flydubai aircraft, I would not have predicted that six months on we would have achieved so much.

“In that time we’ve launched 10 routes, begun operations to eight cities, taken delivery of five aircraft, opened a new flydubai HQ and carried thousands of passengers. In short we have become one of the fastest growing start-up airlines in the world.

“It has not been without a few hitches along the way, but this has been a very exciting and relatively smooth journey. We still have a long way to go, but we have built a good foundation and I believe we are well placed to handle the challenges that we, as any business, will have to face. I look forward to seeing where our journey will take us in the next six months.”

Bahrain is one of the Gulf’s most established business and commercial centres and in 2008 it was named the world’s fastest growing financial centre by the City of London’s Global Financial Centres Index.

Bahrain is also a gateway for the eastern region of Saudi Arabia with its highly important oil and gas industry. The Bahrain service will target the peak morning and evening periods of travel and provide an alternative on an already busy route.

flydubai’s double daily flights to Bahrain (FZ015 and FZ021) which will begin on December 13, will leave Dubai International Airport Terminal 2 at 0715hrs and 2005hrs, arriving at 0730hrs and 2020hrs local time respectively. The return flights FZ016 and FZ022 leave Bahrain at 0815hrs and 2105hrs arriving in Dubai at 1025hrs and 2315hrs local time respectively. Flight prices start from just AED250 one way.

All flydubai prices include all taxes and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10kg. Flights are available for purchase from the website (flydubai.com), call centre (04 301 0800) and travel agents from today.

The other nine routes in flydubai’s growing network are: Beirut-Lebanon, Amman-Jordan, Damascus and Aleppo-Syria, Alexandria-Egypt, Djibouti-Africa, Doha-Qatar, Khartoum-Sudan, which are already operational, and Baku-Azerbaijan, with services starting on November 20th.

The flydubai model is simple, with customers paying only for the services they want to receive. The price includes all taxes and one piece of hand baggage, weighing up to 10 kg, per passenger.

Passengers have the option to purchase checked-in baggage in advance at just AED 40 for the first piece and AED 100 for the second, weighing up to 32 kg, subject to availability. Checked baggage at the airport is also strictly subject to availability and passengers are advised to book online early to secure the space, as only pre-purchased baggage can be guaranteed.

A nominal payment of AED 5 allows customers to select their seat and just AED 50 secures the extra legroom positions. Bookings can be changed for a small fee, plus any difference in the fare, and food and drink can be purchased on board.

flydubai operates from a modernised and enhanced Terminal 2 on the north side of Dubai International Airport.
